There were four of us at Brookside at 9.30am: Averil, Tom, Jerry and Nigel. The appointed leader Mike K was indisposed so Nigel led the ride south to Saffron Walden, talking a more or less direct route via the Shelfords, Whittlesford, Duxford, Ickleton and over Coploe Hill to Catmere End. The weather forecast had promised clouds and a freezing wind, but in fact it turned out to be neither especially cold nor especially windy, and we enjoyed sunshine for most of the morning. From Catmere End we took the narrow "transmitter road" over the hill from Littlebury Green down to Wendens Ambo. A few miles later we arrived in Saffron Walden where we stopped for coffee at the Temeraire. Mick and Adrian were there already.
Whilst we sat drinking our coffee (large latte and blueberry muffin: £1.99) we watched a flurry of snow pass over outside, a reminder that the forecast was promising snow for the afternoon. Although I offered to lead us on to Haverhill for lunch there was a general consensus to head back home instead. Jerry suggested we take a indirect route back via Ashdon, Linton and Balsham and everyone agreed.
In the event, we never saw any more snow and it stayed sunny for almost the whole journey home. though a cold wind continued to threaten from time to time. I was back home by about 1.30pm for a late lunch. Distance: 40 miles.
