7 Sep: Evening ride to Newton

Nigel writes: My companions for tonight's ride were Paul, Andrew, Brian, Alex, Neil and Sven, with Simon N trying us out for the first couple of miles. The weather was warm and still: very pleasant conditions for an evening ride.

Our route today was slightly shorter than usual: my goal was to reach the Queen's Head in Newton in time to catch the "food truck" that would be there until 8.30pm. We set off south from Cambridge, following the busway and DNA path to Great Shelford and continuing south to Whittlesford and Duxford. When we reached Ickleton, instead of climbing Coploe Hill we turned west and took the direct road west to Chrishall Grange. Along the way the sun set and we turned on our lights.

After a fast run along the B1368 from Fowlmere we arrived at The Queen's Head in Newton at about 8.10pm. There was a food truck outside preparing gourmet burgers, and it was proving very popular, but unfortunately it was overwhelmed by the demand and we were told we would have to wait up to 40 minutes for food. We accordingly abandoned our plans to eat (we won't be doing this again) but still had a round of beers before setting off for home.

We returned via the B1368, Trumpington Meadows and the busway. I arrived home at the earlier-than-usual time of 9.15pm, having cycled 46km (28 miles).
